Welcome to a place where students explore the world and express themselves through media, technology, art, and design. The Magnet School of Multimedia Arts & Design offers a hands-on, technology-infused curriculum for tomorrow’s inventors, designers, engineers and artists—or any child who loves to create and learn from 3-K to 5th grade.
From our 3D printing labs to our “green screen” media creation space, we provide a unique set of tools and technologies for students to explore. Our students use these resources to:
- Investigate grade-level curriculum through Project-Based Learning (PBL), a student-led, inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.
- Learn how to use cutting-edge technologies and media tools, including robotics, podcasting, video creation and editing, animation, 3D printing, and more.
- Develop the 21st century skills colleges and workplaces are looking for, including communication, collaboration, digital literacy, and critical and creative thinking skills.
- Express themselves and develop friendships and social and emotional skills through media, visual arts, and performance arts.
Learn to Code!
A Space to Make, Create, and Learn
We offer a unique set of facilities to open the door for learning, exploration and creation.
- Computer labs with touch-screen PCs and rolling carts with MacBooks, iPads and Chromebooks, so students gain exposure to multiple platforms and operating systems. Our students learn coding skills from Kindergarten on up!
- 3D Printing labs with four 3D printers for making, inventing and prototyping.
- Media A/V lab with green screens for video production and microphones for podcasting.
- Performance space at neighboring Truman High School for our annual shows, where students learn about performing, staging and production.
- Art studio for exploration of visual arts, from painting to mosaic to sculpture.
Special Programs and Partnerships
We offer a number of programs to enrich the academic curriculum and help our students hone their technology skills. Some of these have been made possible through community and industry partnerships.
- Using Lego Robotics in the classroom is a great place to develop engineering, coding and problem-solving skills.
- Magic Box worked with our students on video production, digital literacy, and animation using iMotion. These skills will be used in classrooms in the core subject areas.
- Project Recess worked with our teachers to infuse technology into each curriculum unit.
- Soundtrap taught our teachers how to incorporate podcasting in lessons.
- SEP Jr. (Software, Engineering and Programming) provides opportunities for students to explore computer science concepts through fun extracurricular programs.
- Lehman College Art Gallery worked with our students to create art that will live in the building long after the students have graduated, including murals, mosaics, and more!
- Teachers have been trained in Project-Based Learning through the Buck Institute for Education.
Mission
PS 178 Magnet School of Multimedia Arts & Design students are the citizens, leaders, scholars, entrepreneurs, advocates, and innovators of tomorrow. PS 178 must ensure that 100% of our students are ready for college, career, and life. In order to realize our mission, we must transform teaching and learning at our magnet school. Our students must have access to authentic learning opportunities that will prepare them for success in the rapidly changing world in which we live. The Essentials for Instructional Equity enable this transformation.
Vision
PS 178 Magnet School of Multimedia Arts & Design classrooms and learning spaces need to be places where all students engage in authentic learning opportunities and have access to learning pathways tailored to their unique needs. Authentic learning opportunities engage students at every developmental level with complex, cognitively demanding, real-world problems. The available pathways need to guide students to develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets that will allow them to thrive personally and professionally. They must also infuse the topics, coursework, and experiences that will ignite a critically conscious and active citizenry, ready to collectively craft an even better, more equitable New York City broader world. At our magnet school, we believe that these skills will make our students college, career, and life ready.
Instructional Focus
If students are engaged in rigorous student - centered tasks,
collaborative questioning and discussion techniques, as well as,
Project Based Learning, they will develop critical thinking skills
through oral and written communication across the content
areas to support college and career readiness.

The Magnet School of Multimedia, Arts & Design is part of the Northeast Bronx Educational Park in the Co-Op City section of the Bronx. We are easily accessible from I95 and Hutchinson River Parkway.
